2010 Site Visit on Corporate Philanthropy in Europe to take place September 26 to 29.
KBFUS is inviting a select group of ten to twelve executives of U.S. corporate foundations or giving programs to Brussels for a ‘total immersion’ experience on corporate philanthropy in Europe. The objective is to enable participants to see first-hand how corporate community involvement can be accomplished or enhanced in Europe. Similar initiatives, successfully organized by KBFUS since 2003, drew highly positive comments from all participants, which included senior executives from Altria, Amgen, Boeing, Gap, Goldman Sachs, HP, Kraft Foods, Lucent and Prudential, among others. KBFUS welcomes two new Board members.
KBFUS recently welcomed two new Board members: Sam Fox is Chairman of the Harbour Group. He served as Ambassador of the United States to Belgium from 2007 to early 2009. Maurice Tempelsman is Chairman of the Board of Lazare Kaplan International, He is Chairman Emeritus of the Corporate Council on Africa and Former Chair of The Africa-America Institute.

Help us preserve Belgium’s rich cultural heritage!
With the help of private donors, the Cultural Heritage Fund of the King Baudouin Foundation is able to purchase important works of art that showcase Belgium's great artistic tradition. These works are entrusted to well-known museums in every part of the country, in an effort to bring them to a broader audience and preserve them for future generations. Gifts received last year from our friends in the United States enabled the Cultural Heritage Fund to acquire an exceptional ring created by Henry van de Velde in 1899. Three-day study visit on the American Fundraising Model to take place in April 2010, with the support of American Express.
From April 18 to 21, 2010, KBFUS is organizing its fourth intensive study visit to New York for a select group of 20 senior executives of European universities and cultural institutions. The program, entitled ‘Factors Critical to Success in Fundraising and Development - The American Model’, is designed to introduce participants to the factors that have helped their American counterparts achieve success in fundraising, year after year, and build long-term relationships with donors. It will build on the success of similar initiatives organized by KBFUS since 2007, which drew highly positive comments from all participants. Marcel Crochet, Honorary Rector, Université Catholique de Louvain, said it was “A great introduction to the American art of fundraising.” Ainhoa Grandes Massa (Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona) added “You gave us the motivation we need sometimes to continue our hard job. Interesting topics, bright speakers and perfect organization.” For Pavel Hajek (State Opera of Prague) it was simply “20/20”. You may wish to download the concept paper, the draft program, and/or the list of participants in our previous programs.

The Cultural Heritage Fund of the King Baudouin Foundation purchases important works of art which bear witness to Belgium's great artistic tradition. These works are entrusted to well-known museums in every part of the country, in an effort to show them to a broader audience and preserve them for future generations. The Cultural Heritage Fund, managed by our Brussels-based parent foundation, acquires important Belgian works of art in an effort to keep these works in Belgium, show them to a broader audience, and preserve them for future generations. The Fund concentrates its efforts on works with major historical value that Belgian museums are unable to purchase due to lack of flexibility or insufficient financial means. I have attached a brief presentation of the Fund’s activities and a few examples of recent acquisitions all bearing witness to the country’s rich artistic tradition. New Giving Alliance Gives U.S. Philanthropy a Global Network.
On May 23, 2007, three leaders in international grantmaking announced the Alliance for International Giving, created to help donors easily connect with local, reputable, high-impact charitable groups on multiple continents. The Alliance offers U.S. donors a one-stop-shop for trusted, quality philanthropic services spanning the globe. It brings together three premium providers of donor-advised international giving services: Give2Asia (for gifts to Asia), the King Baudouin Foundation United States (for gifts to Europe and Africa), and the Resource Foundation (for gifts to Latin America). An ‘American Friends’ Fund at KBFUS - A New Tool for European Non-Profit Organizations Seeking to Raise Funds in the United States.
KBFUS recently developed an exciting new tool to assist European non-profit organizations in their efforts to raise funds in the United States: An American Friends Fund at KBFUS enables them to reach out to their U.S.-based donors with a tax-efficient structure that bears their name, without the trouble and expenses associated with the creation and maintaining of an own charitable organization in the United States. KBFUS takes care of all back office operations, such as gift administration and donor support, and provides periodic overviews of contributions received. KBF named best provider of philanthropic services in Western Europe.
Euromoney, a magazine specializing in global finance issues, recently awarded its 2007 Prize for ‘best provider of philanthropic services in Western Europe’ to the King Baudouin Foundation (KBF), the Brussels-based parent foundation of KBFUS. Recipients of the Euromoney Prizes are selected through an annual survey of European private bankers. KBF’s Centre for Philanthropy provides information, guidance and services to individuals, corporations and professional advisors such as private bankers.

Entitled ‘Factors Critical to Success in Fundraising and Development - The American Model’, the study visit will take place from April 22nd through 25th, 2007. It will include multiple opportunities for dialog with highly experienced non-profit professionals and distinguished philanthropists. The objective is to enable participants to examine the factors that have helped U.S. institutions achieve sustained success in fundraising and build long-term relationships with donors – and explore the applicability of lessons learned to their local situation back home. The Princess Elisabeth Antarctic Station: An outstanding opportunity to make your mark in history.
The final plans for Belgium's new research station in Antarctica, to be launched in February 2008, were recently unveiled. The research station will make a significant contribution to the international scientific community through a better understanding of climate change and global warming. As the first ‘Zero Emission’ Antarctic Station, it will also represent international best practice, being entirely run on renewable energy and completely recycling all waste. KBFUS welcomes new Board member.
François M. de Visscher was recently elected to serve as a member of KBFUS’ Board of Directors. François is President of de Visscher & Co., a leading independent financial consulting and investment banking firm for family and closely-held companies. He is also a director of N.V. Bekaert S.A., past president of the Family Firm Institute and current Chairman of the European Family Office Conference.

Shannon E. St. John, Former President of the Triangle Community Foundation, and Emile Boulpaep, Professor at Yale University School of Medicine, joined KBFUS’ Board of Directors in May 2006. Shannon St. John also accepted to chair KBFUS’ Development Taskforce.

WINGS establishes Barry Gaberman Lecture Fund at KBFUS.
WINGS, the Worldwide Initiatives for Grantmaker Support, has created a new lecture in honor of Barry Gaberman, the retiring Senior Vice President of the Ford Foundation, in recognition of his deep commitment to the promotion of international philanthropy and his founding role in WINGS. The lecture will be given every four years at the global gathering of the WINGS network, and will be inaugurated at this year's WINGSForum in Bangkok, Thailand, in November. The costs associated with this and subsequent lectures will be paid for with the income of the new Barry Gaberman Lecture Fund, set up by WINGS at KBFUS. WINGS is currently inviting contributions to the Fund from individuals or foundations that know Barry and have benefited from his wisdom and experience. KBFUS’ Salzburg Festival Fund supports the Festival program for the Mozart Year 2006.
Set up at KBFUS in June 2006, the Salzburg Festival Fund’s objective is to support cultural initiatives in and around the city of Salzburg, Austria. The Fund recently made its first grant: a $1,435,400 contribution to the Salzburger Festspielfonds, to support the Festival program for the Mozart Year 2006.

Raising Funds from the United States: a workshop for European non-profits, June 14 in Brussels.
The workshop ‘Raising Funds from the United States’, organized by KBFUS and the Boston-based consultants Dehandschutter & Associates, will take place on Wednesday June 14, 2006 in Brussels. Along with the organizers, three outstanding speakers will give you an overview of the potential for raising funds from the U.S. and explain the step-by-step approach for the development of a donor network. Their presentations will be illustrated with a practical case study. The workshop should give you the opportunity to fairly assess whether your own organization is a reasonable prospect for an American fundraising campaign. The ‘Lifegiving Water Fund’, a new KBFUS Donor-Advised Fund.
The Lifegiving Water Fund’s objective is to provide water resources to sub-Saharan Africa. Currently it is focusing on building wells in Zambia. Donors wishing to make multiple donations over time to non-profit organizations in Europe or Africa can open a Donor-Advised Fund within KBFUS. They can make additional contributions whenever it suits them, claim an immediate tax deduction and decide later how to use their contributions. They can lend their name to their Fund, determine its areas of focus and invite friends and relatives to contribute. Read more about our Donor-Advised Funds.

New European non-profit partners.
KBFUS provides a tax-efficient structure to European non-profits seeking to raise funds in the United States, and relieves them of the administration, reporting requirements and costs associated with the set up and maintenance of their own American public charity. KBFUS’ new partners include the World Organization Against Torture (Switzerland), the International Polar Foundation (Belgium) and the Smiling Hospital Foundation (Hungary). Belgians in the US support the Red Star Line (Antwerp, Belgium).
In December 2005, KBFUS invited Belgian residents in the U.S. to support the renovation of the original Red Star Line buildings in Antwerp’s South quarter, which will be restored to their historical significance and transformed into a lively, fascinating and educational meeting place. Thanks to more than 40 generous donors, KBFUS recently made a $7,392 grant to the City of Antwerp. Between 1873 and 1935, the Red Star Line transported three million emigrants who set out for a new life in North America. The City of Antwerp is counting on its American friends to help bring back to life this important part of our historic legacy! Interested? Download Antwerp Vice-Mayors Heylen and Van Campenhout’s letter and support this project through an Advised Gift to KBFUS. KBFUS is a Section 501(c)(3) public charity. Donors may thus claim the maximum tax benefits allowed by U.S. law for their contributions.

KBFUS receives artwork and loans it to Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The artwork, a portrait of Catharina van Braam Houckgeest (reverse painting on glass, China, before 1795), forms part of the collection of specially commissioned works of Chinese export art brought to Philadelphia in 1796 by Andreas Everardus van Braam Houckgeest (1739-1801). It was gifted to KBFUS by Margaret G. Elliott, Andreas Everardus’ fifth great grandchild. KBFUS decided to loan the artwork to the Rijksmuseum for an initial period of one year, as suggested by the donor.  The museum already owns several works from the same collection and is recognized for its in-depth expertise on such objects. A helping hand for funding HIV/AIDS initiatives in Central Africa.
The report ‘Out of the Shadows: HIV/AIDS in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda’, published with funding from our Brussels-based affiliate, aims to stimulate donors to become actively involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Central Africa. It provides information on the extent of the pandemic and advises donors on how to target their resources most effectively. KBFUS offers a helping hand to U.S. donors wishing to support local initiatives in Rwanda, Burundi and/or the DR of Congo. Through an Advised Gift, they can support the initiative of their choice, while entrusting the due diligence process to an experienced partner. Newly wed couple establishes the Matara Fund.
The Matara Fund was established by Laurent de Vitton and his wife Una Kim. The Fund’s objective is to promote human development through education. In the first years, it will support initiatives targeting orphans in the Matara district of Burundi. Read more about our Donor-Advised Funds.
